Stonewall

Heard lots of "creaking" snow compressing directly under our skis without propagating like a "whumpf". Dug a snowpit at 6,787' (location above) with 85 cm total snowpack. ECTP 22, breaking at the ground. Loose, wet layer at the ground, no clear facet development. Fairly homogenous snowpack. Continued cautiously to summit at 47.04057, -112.735667, 7130'. Eating lunch on flat summit with 110 cm of wet snow when we experienced a large collapsing "whumpf." No visible cracks, no slides, but it was enough for us to alter our planned descent to follow our skin track back and stay under 30º. Lots of new snow from last week's storm system, and it was foggy and ~34ºF while touring. With no observations of a developed weak layer, cracking, or slides, we guess that with a few days of consistent temperatures the snowpack will stabilize.
