Quick report
There were no signs of instability this morning. Skiing from illumination rock back to Timberline Lodge was supreme. There was fresh snow that became more wind affected as you descended. Skies were clear and calm. I conducted rigorous ski cuts at the top of illumination saddle with no activity. no snow settling or running cracks. The stability was confirmed while skiing down. It appears the instability is locking up. That said, I have no intentions of traveling higher on the mountain anytime soon. Especially given the forecasted weather in the coming days.
Avalanche
I observed two significant pockets that ripped around 10,800 feet on West crater, south aspect of Mt Hood, at 6:30 AM this morning. At 9500 feet I took this video which shows good detail of the pockets that ripped as well as how long and wide the avalanche flowed. I would estimate 2000 to 2500‘ in total distance. I believe this happened within the last 24 hours. This is based on other activity on the mountain the day prior with no details about this slide.
