Visibility was VERY poor today and there was snow falling from 8 AM to 1 PM. It amounted to 2-3 inches. On largely south aspect slopes above 5500' (no other aspects were traveled) there were at least 3 distinct layers of snow. On the surface was a 1-3" layer of new snow that would sometimes crack and slide off the layer below. The second layer down was 4-8" thick above 6500' and looked like wind transported snow. That layer sounded hollow under my feet and on steeper slopes it would sometimes come loose and slide down in blocks under my snowshoes. Below that layer was soft older snow. Based on that snow behavior (especially in whiteout conditions) I stayed on the ridges and did not venture onto the steep wind loaded lee slopes above 7,250'. Skiers made good choices and stayed below 6000' today. Way too foggy for pictures.
