Quick report
We experienced signs of windslab on many aspects and elevations across the baker backcountry. In some places we found the stiffest slabs at ridge tops and on other aspects we experienced stiffer wind affected snow as we descended. It surprised us when we found a slope with the softest snow up high and stiffer slabs towards the bottom. In this case we suspected macro terrain features had caused more wind to swirl towards the bottom of the run than the top (NE face of Video). After multiple productive group conversations throughout the day we may have let our guard down skiing “small” terrain close to the car when the last skier on the slope had a slab pop at their feet. Key take away that I thought was worth sharing with others is that each aspect and elevation change may impact the reactivity of the wind slabs out there so keep your head up through the end of your day.
Avalanche
Small D1 wind slab pocket released on a convex roll on a North West aspect at the end of a full day of skiing. Knocked skier off their feet and slid a couple of meters before snow naturally stopped. 5th skier on the slope triggered the small slab showing just how stubborn/ unpredictable these wind slabs seem to be.
