Fantastic ski conditions this morning with light to moderate snowfall during much of our time in the Red Lake region between 9am-1pm. Overnight new snow amounts varied between 6-10" depending on the sheltered nature of the slope, with an additional 1-3" falling during the morning hours. The crust from previous rain at this elevation was only encountered in scoured terrain at the ridge tops. Cracking associated with interfaces in the new snow was observed in sheltered, below tree line terrain, generally about 6 inches down. This cracking only occurred when stepping above the skin track, and generally extended 1-2' beyond the end of the skis. Small pockets of wind loaded snow were encountered, but consisted of hard slabs were no cracking was present. Small, inconsequential slopes over 30 degrees were skied with no instabilities observed. Obscured skies limited observations of the surrounding peaks/terrain.
