33cm of fist to four finger storm snow overlies the Jan 3rd sun crust (MFsc) and surface hoar (SH) layer. The sun crust is 2cm thick and supportive. Compression tests produced moderate (14 taps) sudden planer results on 2mm facets which were on top of the sun crust. We could easily trigger the storm snow on steep pillows and unsupported features. We also experienced localized whumpfing while on the skin track. The snow pack below the sun crust consists of larger facets, a series of crusts and is generally weak. Snow pack depth ranged from 90-110cm.
