Puking snow but still shallow

The snow was falling heavily all day, but the snowpack is still shallow - approximately 1 m deep.
In an alpine location, we found a weak layer of sugary facets buried approximately 50 cm below the surface. This layer gave a sudden failure in a compression test and we experienced a number of whumpfs in the area. However, we did not see any avalanche activity.
We skied cautiously to avoid contact with buried rocks and avoided steep and wind-loaded terrain.
