Gorman Lake

We had a quiet trip up to Gorman, only saw a handful of other riders in the area. As we reached Gorman Lake, spindrifts of loose dry snow were falling from steep and extreme features. A lack of recent snowfall was evident, old tracks could be seen on most slopes and all aspects into the alpine.
In the alpine visibility was rather poor, however we were able to sneak up to both High Col’s and we saw large cornices at ridgetop. We retreated to treeline to find some definition and some untouched snow to look for surface hoar layers in the snowpack. We found the definition, but not the untouched snow or surface hoar - it was difficult just to find a profile location that didn’t have tracks though it.
Digging into the snow, 30 cm of low density snow covered a firm and supportive mid-pack. Seeing so many other tracks and no recent avalanches, along with how the snow was feeling under the sleds and our feet, we stepped out into steeper terrain. While most slopes had tracks up the middle, we found playful powder to ride off to the side and had a fun afternoon under the impressive and looming rock walls of Gorman Lake.
