We kept it pretty mellow today; sticking to slopes that were angled less than 30 degrees after finding a scary weak layer of surface hoar in the area that was buried about 55cm deep. This weak layer can be found just above an old rain crust (see snowpit photo) and was shown to be reactive in our tests. We didn't see any recent avalanches in the area, but it felt like this layer was just waiting for a human trigger to set it off. With the potential for remote triggering and large avalanches we decided to avoid any potential overhead hazard from steeper slopes above us. We found some great skiing on low angle slopes with some fun boot top powder skiing.
