Winter Wonderland in the White Pass

Yukon Field Team, Tuesday 27th December, 2022 6:20PM

It was the first day out in White Pass since the cold snap and I was pleasantly surprise. The place was blanketed with 15cm of very low density powder. Of course, the snowpack is still variable and this amount was just enough to cover rocks in scoured areas but also made for great skiing on slopes with a deeper snowpack. This powder sits on top of a wind hammered middle snowpack. All of this sits on a 20-40cm thick layer of basal facets at the ground. I dug in a wind loaded, north facing, upper tree line feature and found 175cm of snow. This consisted mainly of 15cm of powder - 120cm of hard wind pressed snow - and 40cm of weak surgary snow. I did get the snowpack to fail 50cm down on some very small weak crystals between 2 layers (CTM 16 SP down 50Cm). Still lots of thinly buried rocks out there in exposed areas.
