5 Mile Creek

jothamapaloo, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Spent the afternoon at 5 mile area Was also in the area Friday morning. Since Friday the little melt crust at the surface was reduced. Skinned up to first summit and across the plateau to 1250m arriving there around 4pm. Traveling was pleasant with no wind ~5-20cm ski penetration depending on wind exposure. Many few-day-old avalanches visible in the area at various aspects and elevations. One of particular note, a size 0.5 point release on a westward slope around 700m elevation on 5 mile area (photo attached). No evidence of instability friday/saturday. Some propensity for the most recent storm snow to slide on the underlying melt/wind crust, but the failure was always localized. Snow melting around interfaces with dark objects (i.e. on trees) but not at surface. Surface hoar developed friday night and persisted through the day on saturday below 700m. Overall the skiing was great; better at treeline than in the alpine in this area but alpine is worth it for the view.
