<p>The field team pushed into both of the valleys in Big Y. The height of snow was less than on the West side of the highway, with an average depth of 95cm and many exposed rocks. We were on the hunt for recently formed surface hoar, and did not find it in the alpine in Big Y. The 4cm of light snow that fell on January 12th covers widespread hard wind affected surfaces in the alpine. Travel is easy and fast on these surfaces.
At 1400m the winds were moderate from the southeast, with very light precip, broken skies, and -11.5 C.
