Practice Slopes

bwjonah, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Spent last 3 days in the Asulkan and Illecillewaet Valley with increasing snow accumulation and no wind at and below treeline (until noon today). We skied very conservatively and had no skier triggered avalanches, but natural avalanches triggered on steeper terrain were seen. By the Practice Slopes today 35 cm of storm snow sliding on 40 degrees convex rolls were seen on our first runs on 30 degree slope along trimline of Practice Slopes (see pic). We stayed off the main avalanche path and skins off and on transitions where in safe zones, however, wind gusts picked up at noon and triggered from above on steep slopes caused the storm slab to slide to near bottom of the avalanche path. The edge of the slide covered our outer most tracks (furthest from timeline). A crown can be seen in pics, but it looks to be a secondary and lower crown triggered from the main slide. We were putting on our skins at the bottom when the loose slide happened (sz 3 estimated by the large boulder that was covered in the main flow), the slide didn't touch anyone (2 other parties were in the area).
