Telkwind affected

AvCan Northwest, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

We maximised on a clear day after yesterday’s storm to travel in simple terrain (along a broad, flat ridge) and see lots of of avalanche terrain while assessing the hazard. We saw several size 1 (small) avalanches that occurred naturally on wind loaded features. They were approximately 20-40cm deep and found mostly on SE facing slopes in the alpine and at treeline. Most areas had wind affected snow, from yesterday’s storm as well as previous outflow winds from the NE, but we were able to find some good sledding conditions in sheltered areas at treeline. The snowpack on a N facing slope at 1600m was 190cm deep. We found 15cm deep layer of stiff wind slab overlying a layer of facets. This wind slab failed with moderate loads on a Column Test (CT) but did not produce a propagating Extended Column Test (ECT) results.
