Mt Decoeli

jocelyn_nadeau, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Skinned up towards Mt Decoeli going around the Rocky outcrop and up the SW ridge. Good travel on sled tracks all the way to the pass. Ski crampons useful to reach a high point of the ridge then mountaineering axe useful for the bootpack to the summit. There was a variable crust on the SW ridge from breakable to very hard. Thin snowpack less than a foot deep on the ridge. Sky was obscured for most of the morning but temperature was just under 0 degrees and wind were calm on the summit so we ended up waiting more than 2 hours for a break in visibility. We skied from the summit down the SE facing gullies on a very thin snowpack with lots of exposed rock. Mix of dry and moist snow with the elevation gradient over a firm crust throughout. Weather cleared enough from the pass to spot a recent size 1.5 (probably a day old) off a W facing slope on the other side of the valley.
