French Haig Robertson

jake.finnan, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

Perfect day on the FHR traverse today, feeling super lucky on the timing. Perfect weather, some fresh snow and first tracks. Coverage for the French Creek approach is excellent. Once you break treeline, I recommend hooking right and heading into the creek/glacier draw instead of messing with the moraine on climbers left, the coverage isn't good there. 10cm of fresh snow found us breaking trail all day so I can eat more cookies. The steep slope to the col is hardly holding any snow, I highly recommend crampons for it. Perhaps heading up on the right would be easier? The ski down was great, 10cm of powder on the supportive disaster below it, minimal wind effect. Some bare ice in spots, be careful! A -16c start reaching -11c on the Haig, it didn't really feel like spring until noon. The snow held up great!
