Windslab at Fraser
Yukon Field Team,
Thursday 22nd February, 2024 2:30PM
Today we skied at Fraser. With about 10 cm of new snow and strong gusting to extreme southerly winds over the previous 24 hours, we were heading out with a mindset that fresh wind slabs would be forming. Winds were strong gusting to extreme in the alpine and made for difficult travel. Any new snow that was available for transport was being blown away and turned into wind slabs on northern aspects and Lee features. We did not make it too far into the alpine due to the strong winds but the new snow has improved ski quality especially as we descended into the treeline. Snow and strong southerly winds were steady through the day and we suspect there has been more extensive windslab formation on lee features in the alpine.
