powder skiing and avalanche puzzles

Yukon Field Team, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

Above Bryant Lake again today we saw new natural avalanche activity. There are two avalanche concerns for us: 1. Slab avalanches on Northeast aspects where size 2 avalanches have gone 50 cm deep in a few locations higher in the alpine (see photo - this is the kind of place where the snow that fell Monday is the deepest). 2. Loose avalanches that are narrow and starting in steep rocky areas on South aspects where the new snow is not bonding well to the old hard surface. Today was not a day to walk under a big slope, so we thought carefully about where we went and checked in at every decision point. We found great powder skiing. It was calm and near zero in the alpine today. It felt like spring.
