Rockisle and Wawa conditions

cmurrayschlitt, Friday 8th November, 2024 10:56AM
Went for a tour around Sunshine's sidecountry. Found significant variability in conditions at treeline, we skied on polar aspects where snow was still dry, but still early season conditions out there. Lots of rocks to hit, conservative skiing a must. Not enough snow for ski travel below treeline. Between 2200-2350m HS 30-40, drifting up to 45. Surface variable, 2-4mm surface hoar on sheltered polar aspects, 0.5-1cm melt freeze crust forming and moist snow for top 5-10cm on solar aspects. Widespread crust at base of snowpack up to 5cm thick, 5cm of 1-2mm facets on top, with a small crust above the facets. Snow above crusts mostly DF 0.5-1mm ranging from 4F to F depending on aspect. Isolated 5-15cm stubborn wind slab at TL, more prevalent up in the alpine on NE aspects. Couldn't get anything to crack more than 1m or move far. Inconsistent CTE 4-7 results on compression tests in drifted areas around 2250m. Resistant planar fractures down either 30cm on the thin crust, or 15cm on suspected buried surface hoar. Significant spatial variability in test results. Observed debris from 3 point releases on steep southern cliffs on Mt Brett.
