Observations during an AST 1 field day.

Chickadee Valley Lake Louise

Francisco Medina-Schlotterbeck , Sunday 15th January, 2023 7:45PM

A 24hrs old, Sz 2 from Boom Mt S face down the first main avalanche chute when entering the valley was observed. It ran 1/2 of the path, due to poor visibility we don't have much else to add.
On the chute area, at around 1800m, which has an HS around 90cm we had several CTM (12-13) RP, BKN down 30-40cm on SSW aspect. A new thin MF crust is growing on solar aspects here.
On the other side of the Vally, towards the step face on Mt Whymper area at 1850 we have few more CTM (12-13) RP, BKN down 40cm, plus few ECTP16-17on E aspect. Several small area whoops were also noted in the area.
Also rime growth was noticed on trees between 1700 and 1800m.
HS is not very supportive to ski traffic, digging to HS bottom fairly easy.
Beside that, great day out there!
