Little Simpsons Gulch

geoffbirch, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

A stellar day skiing deep & light powder in Little Simpsons Gulch area. Features such as The Y-Glades/Diagonal Line as well as The Washout were bottomless powder turns. No signs of major instabilities, no cracking, no whumpfs, just wedges of skin track sliding on the crust between switchbacks. Pole probing showed evidence of all this recent storm snow sitting on the crust (from mid-January?) that seems to have weak spaces underneath the crust, and in between deeper crusts--though we did not dig a pit and have a look at these layers. Steep terrain had sluffs running on this crust that is down about 40-70 cms depending on the aspect. The weather today in this location seemed to be in the meeting zone of the warm pacific front clashing with the cold arctic front which had at varying times rime forming cloud, then winds, then calm, falling dry + light snow, and at various times plummeting temps then at times seemingly warmer, then later in the afternoon dipping down to -18C. A mint day.
