Big Kahuna Big Group

jamesminifie, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

We used short periods of good visibility to grab a great run down the Big Kahuna today. We tracked up the run itself and assessed storm slab development and bonding closely. The skiing was still great but the storm snow had settled into a firmer slab through wind action and was sitting on a softer layer of preserved stellars. As we neared the top of the run the hardness of the slab increased consistently and this, along with active wind slab development in start zones above made the decision to ski from below the summit an easy one. After this we began uptracking across slope to the Little Kahuna (east of Big Kahuna) but the wind intensified and we pulled the plug as cross loading was creating a slab that we didn't want to do battle with.
