Vidalia Onion

<p>Today we went to the Onion to get a handle on the snowpack. We dug multiple pits and found the Feb 26 surface hoar down ~25cm and the Feb 13 rain crust/facet combo down ~60cm. The temps were mild in the alpine and the winds were moderate. This is optimal conditions for transporting the recent storm snow into wind slab and building cornices. There was an older(48 hr) avalanche that was reported on saturday(march 12th) as being triggered by snowmobiles. This is enough evidence for us to give the wind loaded alpine slopes some space and stay away from the large looming cornices. </p>
