Tent Ridge

trevor.pizzey, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

90 cm snowpack in the trees and everything was really solid. 150 cm at tree line. Even at tree line, the bottom 75 cm was still wet from rain earlier in the week. Dense, heavy type wet, not slushy or loose at all. Didn’t have a thermometer with me, but things have not frozen up yet deep in the snowpack. At tree line, 10 cm of powder on top of a 3 cm hard rain crust, then 10 cm of consolidated bonded snow and then another 3 cm hard rain crust. The powder has not bonded to the top rain crust at all, and was easy to get moving on steeper slopes. I got a partial planar release on the lower rain crust at CTM 20, see second photo. We stayed on shallow angle slopes because of the powder wanting to slide on the crust. Some cornice development at the top of Tent Ridge from westerly winds is visible, but not very big at this point.
