Great skiing in pretty low hazard avalanche conditions today. It appears that many of the areas around McBride don't have the same scary persistent weak layers of surface hoar that the rest of the North Rockies do. We found no signs of avalanches all day even after sledding 30km up the Holmes FSR and seeing up into many large avalanche terrain features that faced all directions. We parked the sleds at 1200m and toured up on skis to 1700m on an east facing slope. For about 20 min we experienced an intense squall of snow that probably only amounted to a couple of cm, other than that we had decent weather all day. We dug a quick snowpit at our high point and found no signs of weak layers and a very stable looking snowpack. Skiing down we had some great turns down the lower half of an avalanche path.
