Skied below the clouds today in the Mt Field area. We heard an avalanche and then saw a large powder cloud below the Wapta Mtn - Mt Field ridge at about 10:30am. Most likely trigger was the huge cornices along the ridge, though visibility was limited.
Snow ranged from dry powder up high, changing to heavy snow at ~1700m and then sloppy snow on the road out.
We dug a pit at 2050m on a north facing slope. Snowpack depth was 270cm. Got a series of results for our column in the top 40cm:
20cm - 3rd wrist tap
30cm - 6th elbow tap
40cm - 1st shoulder tap
Based on this, we avoided slabby/wind affected features and stuck to planar, supported and treed slopes.
