I can’t remember the last time we got this much snow in White Pass without wind.
YAAFRA measured 25cm HST in 12 hrs. At higher elevations have seen 50+cm in the last 24 hrs, most of it Saturday night. Appears to have come in with steady temp and nil wind. See photos of snow accumulation in trees undisturbed through day on Sunday.
From highway past Fraser we skied up to Bryant Lake, traversed lookers right. We stayed on mellow terrain in glades. Visibility wasn’t great in alpine, with light snow through day. Most notable observation is the number of naturals: storm slab problem. By noon many open slopes, especially N facing, anything steep and open had seen natural activity, mostly size 1, some size 2 consistently down 50cm, not running full slope but some were wide propagations up to 100m across with crown lines often just below ridgelines in alpine and along numerous gully features. Storm snow is sitting on a mess of crust/facet layers and surface hoar. Down lower woomfing in willows, low snow HS makes a bit of a tangle to ski through lower elevations where willows are thick and creek bottoms have open water. Up tracks are a slog. Boot pen 60 cm, ski pen 30-40cm. Also saw a few sledding parties, lots of digging and some spinning out right to ground.
Temp steady through day, from 1000 to 1500: -1 C at Fraser (900m) and -2 C at treeline (around 1050m). Snow peters out quickly along highway north towards Tutshi with Nil snow along Windy Arm at highway level, plus temps and freezing drizzle around BC/YK border.
