Warm in the Alpine fo sho

Yukon Field Team, Wednesday 14th February, 2024 3:40PM
We sledded into the Big Blue drainage today and ski toured up onto the glacier and the peaks beyond. The big story of the day was the Above Freezing Layer that say temperatures rise to +2 degrees above 1600m. This resulted in some moist snow developing in very steep south facing alpine features and some pinwheeling out of steep, south, rocky start zones. The warm temps did not impact surface conditions on north aspects or low angle south aspects. The riding quality is still quite good in sheltered south facing gullies, steep north aspects below headwalls, and low angle sheltered features at tree line. Everywhere else is quite wind affected. We again had the shovels out in sheltered alpine bowls looking for buried surface hoar but for the second day in a row, we did not find any. We are starting to get the feeling that all the wind during the storm dealt with most of the surface hoard but it is White Pass so isolated pockets may still be lingering out there. Beauty day and views of Mt Fairweather!!
