Good skiing in the tree line at Hankin!
We avoided wind-loaded features where wind slab avalanches are possible to trigger right now, and we also avoided steep alpine terrain as we wanted to investigate a potential buried weak layer before stepping out into more complex terrain.
We dug near the cabin at the tree line and found a crust with depth hoar and facets (weak snow crystals) surrounding it 160cm deep near the ground. We suspect this was the persistent weak layer which a size 3 (very large) avalanche failed on in Cabin Bowl on December 4th.
