Frozen Scenery

It warmed up to just under -23C in Morfee today, but when you stood in the sun and out of the wind it felt almost warm out. As is typical for the area, the alpine and upper tree line zones are totally wind blasted and don't offer much great riding beyond some very scenic views. We saw no signs of recent avalanches in those areas but avoided them anyway due to the poor riding quality. We managed to find some decent powder in the sheltered trees where we played around for a bit. We dug a quick profile on a south east facing slope and found a couple of weak surface hoar layers down 25 and 55cm. While they weren't showing to be super reactive in compression and extended column tests, they are certainly something to continue to watch for especially before getting on any sort of bigger open slopes below tree line right now. We stuck to mellower stuff in the trees avoiding any large terrain traps, and kept to sunny slopes as much as possible to stay warm!
