Fraser Chutes & Log cabin

mholmes, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Today we skied both Fraser Chutes and Log Cabin. Fraser Chutes has some excellent skiing quality, but it does have a few week layer of concern. We found a reactive surface hoar down around 15cms, under the most recent storm snow. Below the SH is more low density powder, about another 10-15cms. This is on top of approximately 30cm of 1 finger density snow. Below this is a melt-freeze crust, which is covering some more SH and facets. We were getting easy results on the upper SH and easy compression test results on the lower surface hoar/facets below the MF crust, but no results in ECT tests. We also noted 2 large whumps on the ski down. There was very little wind at the chutes, as the wind is mainly coming front the north. Log cabin had similar amounts of new snow, but once above tree line there has been some wind from the NW. It has scoured most of the N aspect, and deposited into approx 50cm wind slabs, which are not well bonded to the old snow. There is also a layer of melt-freeze/facet/surface hoar below tree line, which again was giving us easy results in compression tests. Skiing on southern aspects was great, as was below tree line northern aspects.
