Rummel couloir

bensoneff, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

Went up and skied one of the couloirs above Rummel lake today. The snow below treeline in sheltered areas was soft and we where hopeful our line hadn’t been to to hammered by the wind. We where wrong. We found the line to be very wind effected with lots of breakable windslabs. We dug hand shear tests a couple of times as we ascended but none of the windslabs had any reactivity and just made for punchy skiing. We didn’t top out as the last 10M of the line was just facets and we suspected it would be rocky and thin. Fun day out but exited for a reset! We did also see a 2.5 cornice triggered avi on probably the dec 2nd layer from the last couple days. This was on the N face closest to the road on Mt Galatea. We probed for the layer a couple times while skinning up the fan and didn’t find it.
