Hidden Lakes and Fish Bowl

juliethomas250, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

We skied hidden lakes and fish bowl in the Shames backcountry. Before dropping into hidden lake we noted that the top ~25 cm of snow had formed a wind slab on the crust. We skied a small, supported NE facing slope to test conditions (at the interface of Duncan's bowl and hidden lake bowl) and triggered two size one slab avalanches. Rather than ski the guts of the bowl (which was filled with avy debris from last weeks rain storm anyways), we modified our plan and skied the open tree run on the east side of the lake. It skied great, sunny pow turns, although you could still feel the rain crust in places. Travel back out from the lake was OK but there were a few tricky spots with ~10cm of unconsolidated snow on top of rain crust. We saw some tracks in cherry bowl on the way up and it looked like that group got some great turn. We rode fish bowl on the way out to avoid all the avalanche debris at the bottom of Geronimo and Tree Triangle. It was a bit sun cooked but skied very well at the top. Towards the bottom we triggered a few small wet loose slides.
