Thorington

Meshwell Boschmann, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

10 cm overnight snow at the Asulkan parking lot. 20 cm overnight windloading at treeline on the way to Cleaver. Last big roll to the ramp leading to Sapphire Col had 30-40 cm ski pen. Soft wind ripples from previous night's south wind on the traverse to Sapphire Col. North-northeast wind picked up as we reached Sapphire Col. Descent down from Sapphire Col to Lilly Col was very crusty for the first 20 meters but the skiers right more sheltered feature had upwards of 40 cm ski pen, i.e. very good turns. Sky gradually cleared up as we were contouring to the south slope leading to Leda Col. Upon topping out, it was all blue skies to the north. Belayed ski cut with a 60m rope (2x 30m) over the Thorington's impressive convex roll did not produce any result. Digging down 10 m below the roll revealed a 30-40 cm soft slab (F to 4F). The soft slab was triggered with a ski cut, 30-40 cm deep, 20m wide and ran 200m +. The remaining if the run was mostly knee deep with some waist deep pockets on the very last fall line pitch before the traverse leading back to the Triangle Moraine. If you know where to find it, there is some stellar turns to be had at the pass right now.
