The winds of change.

Yukon Field Team, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Traveling in flat light and trying to find terrain sheltered from the wind was the name of the game in White Pass today. It was another low visibility storm day with moderate to strong winds. Snow started later in the afternoon with temps staying below 0c. We received 1cm across the day not the 10 - 15cm that was forecast. The wind had found its way into the fantail flats and log cabin meadows. It feels very ‘Wheatony’ and a big change from the powder stash found a week ago. There’s a breakable crust covered with 10cm heavy snow. Underneath that crust there’s sugary facets to the ground. We found our best riding in pockets of terrain in the trees that were sheltered from the wind. What’s primarily keeping us out of the mountains is visibility and winds. If we could access avalanche terrain we would be cautious of wind loaded lee features and cross loaded terrain. We would be watching for shooting cracks, drum like sounds and decreased ski pen as indicators of wind slab formation.
