Early Season Asulkan

Spent the weekend up at the Asulkan Hut. Lots of wind and snow Friday night and all day Saturday created a number of windslabs. We went above the hut on Saturday looking for snow deep enough to ski and started with the idea of skiing one of the smaller, lower angle moraines before skiing a larger slope. As we stepped onto the bottom of the moraine ridge (red X) we remote triggered a 0.5 and size 1 slide on the moraine we had intended to ski. This was enough for us and we returned to the hut for 9 hours of cards. We spotted at least two more natural windslab crowns above the hut later in the afternoon. The ski out the next day consisted of wet and heavy snow and survival skiing along creeks and the summer trail. We had better skiing than the last MIN but it’s definitely still not winter skiing conditions.
