Saw an avalanche today. Scary as hell. Also cool

We found the coolest ice tunnel past Babette lake a little above treeline. A left over portion of Glacier that normally isn’t visible due to wind loading off Mt. Sir George in the Kakwa park. A really interesting discovery. There was a large group there when we arrived but they bugged out shortly after. We rode through the tunnel a few times and played on the other side where there was some deep pow. We were having a coffee and getting ready to leave on the downhill side of the tunnel when there was a sudden whump noise and one of our crew yelled AVALANCHE!! It very much appeared to be coming in hot so we fired sleds and mashed throttle. Even the 2 newbies in the group made buttonhook turns we had been practising previously and did a great job getting moving quickly under duress. As it turns out it wasn’t nearly as severe as what it first appeared to be. The snow cloud coming towards us was surely intimidating and I was glad it wasn’t worse. Could nearly feel the sound. I believe a cornice up high let go and propagated some snow as it came down a fairly vertical section of the mountain. Made one heck of a scary looking cloud! Looking back as we rode away I could quickly tell the risk was over and the severity was less than initially thought. Not much visible to take a picture of and didn’t much feel like getting too close to investigate that any further in the event some hangfire was up there and visibility wasn’t the best. So glad I’ve taken AST 1&2. Some of the best money I’ve spent to ensure I get back to my family at night. A fun day with a little excitement. It rained a lot even at elevation today. Enough to be wet from it. Crusty top layer with very faceted snow below. Made for some not fun stucks with the 2 new riders in our group lol.
