Top hat Traverse

Kent Martin, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Top Hat traverse (north col) today with a quick powder lap up the lower shoulder of Carnavon. No wind effect and and south shoulder of Carnavon skied well with no movement - moderate non planar hand sheers in the 20-30 of storm snow. A pretty “wild” skin track went up to Emerald shoulder from Friday - very exposed to overhead - better off gaining that shoulder before the slides imo Up to Top Hat - C-von col, did pit 15 meters below the col on the south east side. 180cm and CT 13 in the storm snow non planar and could not get anything else to go even at 30. No Biden crust present, very bottom 15cm facetting. Really solid progressively dense snow pack with no real firm obvious layers. Unfortunately we were the first ones down and clouds rolled in so flat light skiing. Epic snow. A few 3-4 day old 3/4 class slides in the bowl remind one the terrain there is serious.
