Sunny and warm in Crowsnest
South Rockies
Terrain , Thursday 7th January, 2021 8:40PM
Surface snow was becoming moist this afternoon with warm temperatures and sunny skies. Surface hoar was present at all elevations, larger in sheltered areas. We observed a large slab avalanche on a south aspect in the alpine on a steep, rocky slope that probably released some time yesterday. Suspect a persistent weak layer near the bottom of the snowpack.
Snow conditions were: Crusty, Heavy. Weather conditions were: Warm, Sunny. We rode: Mellow slopes, Open trees. We avoided: Steep slopes. Riding quality was ok.
Avalache Conditions: Rapid temperature rise to near zero degrees or wet surface snow. Slab avalanches today or yesterday.
