Hankin

bryanmitchell.07, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

Went for a dog walk at hankin today. 0.5cm rain / melt crust at the parking lot. Crust tapered to 0cm at 1160m. Between 1160 and ~1300m, thin rain crust was present about 1-5cm down (indicating snow on rain?). Above 1300m, no discernible crust, however wind affected snow everywhere! Lots of variable wind in the alpine and treeline today. Heavy gusts from the west before noon, and wind direction changed to easterly afterwards. Lots of reverse loading, and cross loading present. Appeared to be a few ~0.5 wind slabs pulled out over night in cabin bowl. Dug a pit: height of snow was 180cm at 1420m on a north aspect. Found thin storm interface from Thursday / Friday about 10 down, the Jan 19th melt crust about 30down, and facets from early jan were about 75 down. ECTN24 on the jan 19 melt crust. Thickness and density of this layer is decreasing. Facets from early jan were also rounding significantly in this location. The day was better than anticipated.
