Log Cabin

Jasmin Dobson, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Skied at Log Cabin today at elevations from 900 - 1300 m. There were strong northernly winds for most of the day and snow transport was evident throughout most of the day. Ski quality was variable througout the day and as we left treeline the snow was hard or had a breakable wind crust. In some areas the hard snow on surface was approximatley 10 cms thick and it was underlain by a 20-30 cm softer layer followed by the denser mid-pack. Did not feel any whumpfing or drum like sounds while skiing today but that layering was something we were keeping an eye on as we were skiing. At sheltered treeline locations and below treeline there was 20 cms of powder that was sitting on a crust that made for some nice skiing. In sheltered areas (gullies) we were able to find some powder that also had not been wind affected. Near treeline, in one gully we did observe some crossloaded snow that had some strength to it and displayed some shooting cracks (1 m) but upon ski cutting the snow the slab did not really move (gully was only crossloaded on one side, not the entire gully). We observed the avalanche debris from earlier in the week but did not note any new avalanches.
