Powder in the Perry

North Columbia

AVCAN FORECASTER , Wednesday 17th April, 2024 4:00PM

Today we went looking for powder up the Perry river and found up to 40 cm of recent snow in the alpine which tapered rapidly to only 10ish cm below treeline. The recent snow overlies a crust on all aspects. The pow we were riding had not yet settled into a cohesive slab and we didn’t observe any signs of instability or recent avalanches. Our primary concern was strong solar radiation settling the recent snow into a reactive slab. This would be most likely at upper elevations where there is 30+ cm of recent snow sitting on a crust.
