Sky Pilot Conditions

kenyonslaneym, Tuesday 27th February, 2024 5:00PM
Woke up feeling lucky and decided to check out the S2SG conditions after the recent snow. It was just about worth the trip. Hiked on bare ground for 3.5km, and found skinnable snow about 500m beyond the Habrich Spur. The triangle trees were pretty heinous with 10cm cold dust on a hard crust. Coverage steadily improved as we gained elevation, with 180cm HS at the toe of the Stadium Glacier. We found some nice powder turns in the alpine, with 20-40cm new snow resting on crust above facets. In lee spots this slab was cohesive and showed signs of weakness in shear tests. Good info to have, but this will all likely be out of date after tomorrow’s weather.
