The Way of the Wolverine

Northwest Coastal

It was our first day in the region and we went skiing up near the Sterling Snowmobile area. The Sterling road was an icy mess. There is no snow in the bush at the highway elevation. We drove till we got stuck at 500 m then sledded till almost 800 m where there was enough wet snow to start skiing. Once above 1100 m it started to feel like winter again and the surface snow was dry. We dug a profile at 1200m, but there were no significant snowpack test results, just lots of layers of melt freeze crusts from all the warm weather and rain events. Visibility was extremely limited, so we were unable to see any recent avalanche activity.
