Illecillewaet Glacier

sofiaforsman91, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

While probing on the Illecillewaet glacier tongue (start of the glacier) I noticed a huge variability of depth ranging from 320+ in sheltered spots and as low as 150. The recent winds (specifically on the 19th) seem to have scoured any roll over. Be careful while travelling up the glacier, the track goes over obviously crevasses with as little as 150cm of snow. Stiff and sticky wind slabs are forming in the alpine. At the entrance of forever young a 20-60 cm slab is sitting in the convex roll above the couloir. They are firm but don’t seem to want to move, no cracking observed. Styrofoam like skiing. Happy skiing!

Weather Report

Windier than forecasted for. Moderate verging to strong westerly winds, snow and low clouds made for minimal visibility. Combine that with high humidity and cold temps, today was frosty! The unstable weather is here.
