Ast field day. Very minimal new snowfall in the area over the weekend (8cm) Average treeline temp of -5 throughout the day. Overcast skies, snowing very lightly on and off most of the day with approximately 1cm an hour noted at 1500hrs.
Test profile at 2200m on an East aspect. 24degree slope. 195cm snow depth. Winds light from the SW. Approx. 8cm of new snow on top of early January surface hoar. Dec 15 surface hoar layer down anywhere from 25-34cm at this location depending on loading. Upper 35cms is getting stiffer and showing slab properties. Moderate compression test results (sudden collapse) on the Dec 15. Repeated several times. More importantly was the larger column test (extended column test) produced moderate (2) results (sudden collapse) on two back to back tests. This test and the results show that the upper slab on top of this weak layer is showing potential for propagation (large shooting crack avalanches) With new load forecasted, the upper snowpack stiffening and several weak layers buried in the pack, we need to get back to making informed terrain choices
