Summit creek camp

I was out at the pass at Summit creek with a youth group. We did not ski or go up the slopes (we were snowshoeing). Wednesday was warm with a SW wind that moved a lot of snow up high. There was a breakable crust under our feet in the valley. The snow was wet. Wed night was warm (about -1) with 4cm of snowfall. Thursday, there were winds up high (SW), but it was pretty calm in the valley. We dug snow pits at low elevation and grade (15 degrees). There were a couple layers that slid at moderate (15) on compression test, either at 15cm or 35cm deep. It was a warm day, with temps above freezing level. Thursday night the skies were clear and the temperature dropped to around -12. Friday morning, the skies were clear and everything was crusty and hard. The fresh snow from the day before was now a semi-supportive crust. The melt-freeze cycle has started! On our drive back, we saw pin-wheels on Fraser Chutes and Log Cabin, and saw a few wet slides further north on SW aspects. These went on steep slopes (+40 degrees) and ran to the valley bottom. A great camp! Be safe out there.
