BRRRRRR! First real day of winter temps felt ridiculously cold with the light north west winds. Morning valley bottom temps of -18. Alpine temps at 1200hrs -12. Winds sustained light from the NW in the alpine. Blue bird day and cold! Winds have worked the alpine. Suspect all lee aspects to have windslab development and now some reverse loading on the southerly stuff with these NW winds and light dry surface snow. Trails side at 1800m - the surface hoar from Dec12 is still up to 15mm in size, quite robust and now has 14cms of snow on top. Easy hand tests, but more of a collapse not a shear. New snow on top of the this layer is still cold and light with no cohesion. Trail side sled test produced no results. Alpine, on south asp at 2150m. thin crust down 18cms. Late nov cr down 70cms and stiff as hell for now. Only test profile results were on the thin cr. Easy sudden collapse. Again no cohesion in the snow above to produce a slab yet........ Most recent snowfall maybe 15cms but winds have moved it around so much that it its quite variable. I am going to be very cautious when this newer snow stiffens up and becomes a slab as avalanche will become much more likely.
Ride safe folks and merry Christmas.
