White Tail Burn

flagler.grant, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

Spooky conditions in the White Tail Burn today. Snow conditions and the ability for recent storm snow to bond with the January 30th crust varied based on aspect. We believed that the North aspect may hold the best snow and found a mixture of hard slab (1F-), soft slabs (4F), and storm snow (F). Best ski quality existed lower down our first run. On our ski out, we observed a small release on a steep convexity, up to 25 cms deep slab, running on what we believed to be the January 30th PWL. Reports and observations from the second half of our party who attempted to ski an additional lap, stated that they were able to release several size 1 avalanches while skinning on a west aspect. All were likely triggered on the January 30th crust. Weather: -4 at roadside parking at 0930 warminf to -1 in the afternoon. Winds began as moderate gusting to strong from the South/Southwest and then swung to west winds, increasing to strong, gusting at times to extreme. Trace amounts of new precip
