Quick Observation
How quickly fortunes turn on the Island! We were up at Mt Cain for the Backcountry Fest. Saturday was rain, rain, rain, but that didn't damper the enthusiasm of all the keen folks who showed up for backcountry clinics and other festivities. That evening rain turned to snow, and we had a nice transition to cooler temps and about 15cm of new snow overnight. Good skiing in the West Bowl on Sunday, with the fresh snow stuck well to the newly formed crust. Moist snow beneath crust. Power flurries in the afternoon produced another 10cm of very low density snow. Another 10cm low density Interior-like snow overnight made for very nice conditions in the East and West Bowls on Monday (today). Could still feel the melt-freeze crust in steeper terrain and near ridgetops, but otherwise low density powder skiing on all aspects. No new avalanches observed.
